If you were travelling on the Isle of Wight today and using Google Sat Nav, you may have encountered several unexpected road closures.
Dan Morgan from Island PC noticed the issue and got in touch with News OnTheWight to share the news.
Two weeks early?
As you can see from our screen grabs above and below and from Dan’s short video below it almost looks as though someone has accidentally turned on the rolling road closures two weeks early for the Tour of Britain cycle race – due to take place next Sunday.
Are you a tourist on the island today? Using google sat nav? Looks like there’s lots of incorrect roads closed, somebody pressed the TOB button early? #gridlock #isleofwight pic.twitter.com/D7bxh9GDdN
Explanation
At time of publishing, many of the roads that were showing as closed earlier today are still marked as being closed until 12th September – the day after the final stage of the Tour of Britain takes place on the Island.
News OnTheWight will write to Island Roads and Isle of Wight council to find out what went wrong.

Yet another reason to use a proper map rather than satellite navigation…?

Today’s young drivers would not have a clue how to navigate via a road map….. especially when coming ‘down’ the map. PMSL

Walking the dog this morning round Carisbrooke Castle I found several cars trying to pass each other at the junction of Millers Lane, Clatterbrook Shute and Froglands Lane. No way was it possible for so many vehicles to pass each other. More and more came along Millers Lane trying to turn onto Clatterbrook Shute. I tried to warn some drivers but they were too ignorant to stop. Others just couldn’t turn and had to join a line of 20-30 vehicles. Most I talked to were tourists trying to get to the Needles! One driver said she lived along there. Oops.

We still have the problem of people trying to drive along Undercliff Drive, even though it closed ~7 1/2 years ago . . .
