Meet Perth’s newest rooftop bar
Occupying the 18th floor of Quest East Perth hotel, rooftop bar Folly gives Perth drinkers another option for drinks with a view. On the left side of the bar, guests can enjoy panoramas of the CBD skyline, while the right side has views of Optus Stadium and the Waca. The cocktails are modelled on the classics: the Cosmo Spritz reworks the Sex and the City favourite, while the deployment of spice turns the Moscow Mule into the Spiced Mule. There’s also spice on the menu of Southeast Asian-inspired snacks, including Korean fried cauliflower with gochujang, crumbed snapper sandwiches, and dumplings in a Sichuan dressing. Folly Perth is open Wednesday to Sunday and bookings are available online.
Rethinking the Sunday roast
As summer gives way to autumn, venues around town are rejigging menus and introducing sturdier, cooler-weather offerings. I’m liking the sounds of Corvo’s new Sunday lunch, a modern-day take on something familiar. “The concept is Corvo’s take on a British roast with a modern twist,” says Corvo partner Alo Simmulmann. “It’ll be beef for the first few weeks and then we’ll rotate between beef, pork and lamb depending on what we can get locally at the right quality.” The lunch is $65 per person and includes a number of share-style dishes including Yorkshire puddings, braised lentils and zucchini fritti to complement the roast. Matched cocktails will be offered each week as well as wine and champagne specials. Bookings are available online.
Paying homage to a beloved pizzaiolo
Rupert McDonald’s Young Levain pizza pop-up was one of the city’s most likeable pizza outfits. Then young McDonald relocated to Melbourne and broke our sourdough-loving hearts. Good thing, then, that Northbridge bakery Miller & Baker has started serving pizza based on the recipes used by McDonald (Miller & Baker regularly hosted for Young Levain pop-ups). The action takes place on Fridays with two different slow-fermented, nutty wholemeal and rye flour pizzas available from 11:30am. And because Miller & Baker owners Rachel and Mark Taylor are big believers in DIY, they’re making their own pizza cheese, which includes fine-tuning a house-made mozzarella they’re hoping to start using in the next couple of weeks. (The pizza oven won’t be on this Good Friday, however.)
Licensed to thrill
After its successful debut in March, dining pop-up Off Licence returns to Fremantle small bar Patio for another night of Italian-inspired cooking. The man behind Off Licence is Drew Dawson, a chef that grew up between East London and Italy and has cooked at wine-centric hotspots such as London’s Laughing Heart, Maeve in Brisbane, and Melbourne’s legendary Napier Quarter. His menu has been written with a similarly breezy bent and features pizza fritti, carrot cavatelli, orecchiette and tiramisu. “The menu’s super affordable and designed to be shared,” says Dawson. “It’s a very open venue and there’s lots of space for long tables, so it lends itself nicely to European-style dining.” Off Licence will pop-up at Patio on Wednesday April 19.
Happy birthday Toastface Grillah
In 2013, Toastface Grillah founders Mike O’Hanlon and Alister Miles introduced Perth to Toastface Grillah, a toastie cafe in a CBD alleyway named after rapper Ghostface Killah. This month, Toastface celebrates a decade in the game and is throwing its 10-year birthday party at its Wolf Lane HQ on Saturday April 23. In addition to sandwiches and drinks, guests will be treated to live performances from local artists Superego, Luci’s and Pimp Whiskers. Tickets are $30 and available online.
