Former President Donald Trump is headed to court in D.C. to face charges he led a wide-ranging conspiracy built on lies to overturn the 2020 presidential election, culminating in the violent attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. The most serious charge carries a maximum prison sentence of 20 years.
Trump left his golf club in New Jersey, heading to the airport just after 1 p.m. ET ahead of his scheduled 4 p.m. court appearance. Trump is expected to enter a plea of not guilty before a magistrate judge. Read more about Thursday’s court appearance.
The case has been assigned to U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan who has previously ruled against Trump and sharply condemned the Jan. 6 riot. Chutkan is a former public defender who later joined Boies Schiller where she represented the failed blood testing startup Theranos in a lawsuit against one of the company’s former law firms.
