“Une forme du virus du Covid-19 présentant d’importantes mutations et qui menace d’être la plus à même de percer les défenses immunitaires du corps humain attire l’attention des virologues et des autorités sanitaires”, annonce le Washington Post. En effet, le variant BA.2.86, lui-même membre de la famille des Omicron, a été identifié dans plusieurs pays, dont Israël, les États-Unis, le Danemark, l’Afrique du Sud, la Suisse ou encore le Royaume-Uni.
Le variant présente en effet plus de 30 mutations de la protéine Spike, qui permet au virus de pénétrer les cellules humaines. Les experts craignent qu’une infection préalable ou une dose de vaccin ne protège pas d’une contamination. Si rien n’indique, pour l’instant, que ce variant occasionne des formes plus sévères de la maladie, il a tout de même été placé dans la catégorie des variants “sous surveillance” par l’Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS).

Pour les experts interrogés par le quotidien américain, cette forme du Covid-19 pourrait atteindre les personnes “qui ont baissé leur garde”. Reste à savoir si sa virulence sera suffisante pour occasionner une nouvelle vague. “Certains échantillons ont été collectés à la fin du mois de juillet. Des rapports sporadiques attestent de transmissions à l’international, mais leur importance n’est pas clairement établie.”
BA.2.86 – surnommé “Pirola”, comme le rapporte le site de la RTBF – n’est pas le seul variant surveillé de près par les scientifiques. Aux États-Unis, les autorités enregistrent une augmentation des contaminations par les variants XBB et EG.5.
Plus que les caractéristiques propres au virus, c’est la perte d’impact des messages de prévention qui inquiète le plus. D’après le journal, les dernières annonces sur les variants – avec des noms “dignes de codes wifi” – exaspèrent la population, surtout quand il est précisé qu’ils ne seraient “pas plus dangereux que les précédents”.
Il faut de plus composer avec une perte de visibilité sur l’évolution du virus du fait du peu de données dont on dispose. L’effort scientifique pour séquencer le virus est moindre qu’il ne l’était il y a un an.
“Mon niveau d’inquiétude change à chaque heure, confie une épidémiologiste. C’est comme observer la formation d’un orage au loin. Nous ne savons pas s’il va s’affaiblir, devenir un ouragan de catégorie 5 ou quelque chose entre les deux.”
