Its striking design by Shim-Sutcliffe Architects riffs on the city’s history

Ace Hotel Toronto has staked its claim on the city’s Queen Street West area with an imposing new building designed by Shim-Sutcliffe Architects.
Guests are welcomed through a striking entrance way, which sees the building’s brick exterior lift up like a curtain, and step into a lobby that’s suspended by gleaming steel rods. The space is made to feel even more cavernous by its huge windows, sculptural concrete beams, and low, midcentury-style seating.

Atelier Ace has designed the interiors, which have a decidedly retro flavour. There’s a mix of bespoke furniture and lighting, as well as vintage pieces sourced from around the city.
Ace Hotel Toronto is the hotel group’s first outpost in Canada. According to Ace, the space is designed to reflect Toronto’s past and future, with its brick cladding a nod to the Mud Creek rock and clay used to make the Don Valley bricks used in many of the city’s buildings. The local theme continues inside the hotel as well, which is scattered with artworks created by Canadian artists and designers.
Bedrooms – which start at CA$549 per night – are minimal in style, with the focus on the hotel’s window nooks, where guests can curl up with a book and spy on the city life going on around them. Downstairs is a sunken restaurant serving a Mediterranean menu, while Ace Hotel Toronto’s roof terrace promises indoor and outdoor lounges to soak up the view towards the CN Tower and Rogers Centre, home of the Blue Jays baseball team.
