Driving mission impact with big data and speed.
Harnessing the power of emerging technology for the public good
With the expansion of computing capacity and sophisticated data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI) and its related technology, machine learning, are woven through the world, both online and off. From healthcare to national security, the development of AI is creating new opportunities to improve the lives of people around the world. It’s also raising new questions about the best way to build security, fairness, proper interpretation, and privacy into these systems.
Industry and government use artificial intelligence and machine learning for jobs that can be dull, dirty, or dangerous. But equally important, these capabilities enable analysts to crunch big data sets to identify patterns and deliver actionable insights. This helps streamline operations and make better use of resources.
At MITRE, we’re harnessing the power of artificial intelligence and machine learning in ways that benefit our nation and protect the safety, security, and privacy of critical infrastructure.
The World Wide Web was developed with security as an afterthought, rather than a core design component—and we’re still paying the price for it today. With AI, it is not too late to consider safety, security, and privacy before society increasingly relies on this technology.
As with all new technologies, we’re still discovering potential opportunities and risks. For example, MITRE is creating an ecosystem of artificial intelligence supply chain vulnerability assessment tools and working across government and industry to assure the trustworthy use of consequential AI. We’re developing and supporting guardrails to protect people and their personal data. We’re working across a community of healthcare systems, medical schools, and subject matter experts to enable effective and equitable use of artificial intelligence in healthcare. And because these technologies are only as equitable and accurate as their programming, we’re tackling the complex challenge of mitigating bias in artificial intelligence systems.
MITRE tackles artificial intelligence and machine learning from every angle. We apply deep technical expertise and systems engineering to advance their capabilities and applications. Among our recent initiatives is MITRE ATLAS, Adversarial Threat Landscape for Artificial-Intelligence Systems. ATLAS is a knowledge base of adversary tactics, techniques, and case studies for machine learning systems based on real-world observations, demonstrations from machine learning red teams and security groups, and the state of the possible from academic research. ATLAS is modeled after the MITRE ATT&CK® framework and its tactics and techniques are complementary to those in ATT&CK.
ATLAS enables researchers to navigate the landscape of threats to machine learning systems, which are increasingly used across a variety of industries. There are a growing number of vulnerabilities in machine learning, and its use increases the attack surface of existing systems. We developed ATLAS to raise awareness of these threats and present them in a way familiar to security researchers.
