Toronto Sales Fell More Than 12% in 2023, the Largest Drop since 2000
Home sales in the Toronto area fell 12.1% in 2023 compared to the previous year, the biggest drop in 23 years, according to data from the Toronto Regional Real Estate Board. The average selling price also declined, falling 5.4% to C$1.13 million (US$843,771). “High borrowing costs coupled with unrealistic federal mortgage qualification standards resulted in an unaffordable home ownership market for many households in 2023,” Jennifer Pearce, the president of the board, said in a statement. “With that said, relief seems to be on the horizon. Borrowing costs are expected to trend lower in 2024. Lower mortgage rates coupled with a relatively resilient economy should see a rebound in home sales this year.” Reuters
South Australia Home With Motocross Track Heads to Auction
A more than 9-acre property with its own motocross track has hit the market in Lewiston, a semi-rural area in South Australia. Located about 30 miles north of Adelaide, the track takes up about half the property. There’s also a 2006 house with four bedrooms, two bathrooms and open-plan living spaces, plus two self-contained apartments. There are also two sheds—one with an air-conditioned office, mezzanine and wash area for motorbikes—as well as an outdoor entertaining area with bar space, an outdoor spa and a four-car carport. Hong Kong Officials Halt Sales of Residential Sites for First Time in 13 Years
No Hong Kong residential or commercial sites will be offered for sale in the last quarter of this financial year, which ends March 31, the first time it has done so in 13 years. Market conditions and a lack of bids on other properties prompted the decision, Bernadette Linn, the secretary for development, said on Thursday. “[As] this year’s supply is rather near the annual supply target, as well as the fact that market sentiment [toward] land tenders is rather sluggish recently, the government will not separately put up any residential sites for sale in the fourth quarter,” Linn said. Rents to Rise by up to 4% in Seattle in 2024
Residential rents could go up as much as 4% in Seattle this year, due to a significant shortage of inventory. Homeowners are staying put in their homes to keep low interest rates, meaning more residents are stuck renting for longer. That could change, however, if mortgage rates stabilize and end up around the expected 6%, which would be good for home buyers, according to Greg McBride, Bankrate’s chief financial analyst. Axios
