The Hawk Makerspace in Farmington Hills, a place to work on craft projects in a community setting, will celebrate its grand opening on Tuesday, Sept. 13.
The Makerspace is inside The Hawk, the city’s recreation and community center at 29995 W. 12 Mile Road.
The kickoff will feature information about classes, equipment, special access passes and more. Tours will be available from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday. The public is welcome to stop by anytime between 10 a.m.-9 p.m.
The Makerspace features more than 5,000 square feet of space, with more than 3,000 square feet of accessible craft space. Specialized equipment includes a laser cutter, engraver, vinyl cutter, a large format printer, a 3D printer, sewing lab with a long arm quilter, an embroidery machine and industrial sewing machines.
The woodshop portion encompasses almost 2,000 square feet and offers the opportunity to use many different types of equipment including a large ShopBot, CNC Router, SawStop Table Saw, panel saw and more.
Makerspace users may purchase passes to use the equipment during open studio hours. Daily, monthly and annual passes are also offered for both individuals and families.
Classes that currently have openings include Build Your Own Bandsaw Boxes, Shaker-Style Tables, Beginner Sewing, Cornhole Sets, Embellished Cheese Boards, Menorah Making and Ornaments.
Program options include a mix of preplanned projects, or you can use the help of Makerspace experts as you navigate through concept, design and fabrication for your own project.
