Home Sales Surged Nearly 38% in Calgary In January
Calgary’s home market has had a blazing start to 2024. The Canadian city’s housing market saw 1,650 homes sold in January, a 37.7% increase year over year, which the Calgary Real Estate Board calls a “significant gain” compared with long-term trends. CREB’s latest monthly report credits the growth to a rise in new listings. Over 2,100 homes were listed in January, with the largest jump in detached homes priced above C$700,000 (US$523,163). NHL Great Chris Chelios Slashes Price of California Home
NHL legend Chris Chelios has lopped a chunk of money from his California home’s list price, dropping the ask from $75 million to a still-staggering $67.5 million. Chelios, who hoisted up the Stanley Cup three times—twice with the Detroit Red Wings and once with the Montreal Canadiens—is hoping to shed the Malibu property and score a nice profit. U.S. Mortgage Rates Drop Slightly, but Still up From a Year Ago
Mortgage rates in the U.S. dropped to 6.63% this week, according to Freddie Mac’s Primary Mortgage Market Survey. Rates for 30-year fixed-rate mortgages were 6.69% last week, dropping by 0.06 percentage points. Rates for 15-year mortgages also dropped slightly from 5.96% last week to 5.94% this week. Both 15-year and 30-year mortgage rates are still higher than they were last year. A year ago, 30-year mortgages sat at 6.09%, on average, while 15-year mortgages averaged 5.14%, Freddie Mac reported. Fox Business
Hong Kong Registers Most Property Deals Since August
The number of property transactions in Hong Kong, including both residential and non-residential units, reached 4,399 in January, a 17% increase from December, the most since August, according to official data from the government’s Land Registry. The surge comes amid the U.S. Federal Reserve’s decision to hold interest rates steady on Thursday morning, the fifth time since September. It was Hong Kong’s third straight monthly rise.
