|
Repair: Apply Now
The Scholars Program invites interested scholars and arts professionals to submit proposals on the topic our 2025–26 theme, Repair. We’re pleased to announce applications for this unique funding opportunity are now open.
Situated between creation and destruction, the act of repair can be deeply transformative, with the potential to heal, alter, and renew the material environment. Beyond such physical interventions, art and sites of commemoration are often mobilized to heal a fractured social fabric. The issue of repair has deep bearing for the arts, conceived in the broadest sense, and especially for institutions that aim to preserve and share global cultural heritage.
Deadline for GRI applications for the 2025–26 year is October 1, 2024 at 5pm PT.

The Secrets We Keep: Hidden Histories of the Byzantine Empire
By Roland Betancourt
Secrecy has played a role throughout human history and continues to capture the popular imagination. Some of the most seductive aspects of the Byzantine Empire—such as the relics of the imperial palace and the military uses of Greek fire—have been shrouded in mystery for centuries. This book provides a brief history of secrecy in Byzantium and examines the role of the art historian in uncovering the truth, demonstrating how visual evidence can not only reveal new findings but also purposely conceal answers.
