New Conservation Grants for 8 Modern Buildings by Black Architects
We recently announced eight buildings that will receive crucial funding from our Conserving Black Modernism initiative. This $3.1 million grant program supports historic modern architecture by Black architects and designers in partnership with the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund. From a dormitory in Mississippi by one of the 20th century’s most influential Black architects who infused a modern campus design with the values of the Civil Rights Movement to a theater in Washington D.C. named after the first Black actor to play leading roles in Shakespeare plays, the grants affirm the importance of African American architects to the history of modernism by preserving their work.

Getty Marrow Emerging Professionals Reflect on their Early Arts Careers
Meet several participants in the Getty Marrow Emerging Professionals pilot program, the first program in the country devoted exclusively to coordinated early career positions at numerous institutions within the same region. As an extension of the Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internships, the program provides alumni with meaningful entry-level employment and mentoring. Participants gain hands-on experience in full-time curatorial, education, and collections-focused roles for up to three years at organizations across LA, including the Hammer Museum, Autry Museum of the American West, and Self Help Graphics & Art. Two years into the pilot program, we spoke with a few emerging professionals to learn about their experiences so far and their plans for the future.

PST ART to Start with a Bang!
Sparks will fly over the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum during a spectacular daytime fireworks performance to kick off PST ART: Art & Science Collide on September 15. Developed by artist Cai Guo-Qiang, “WE ARE: Explosion Event for PST ART” harnesses Guo-Qiang’s multimodal custom artificial intelligence, cAI™ (pronounced AI Cai) to transform the iconic LA site into a grand explosive matrix. With 10,000 firework shells perched on bamboo sticks and more than 2,000 drone-launched pyrotechnics, the event is a fitting start to the landmark arts event at the intersection of art, science, and technology. Read more about the performance in the New York Times, and sign up for the PST ART newsletter below for all the details on how to secure your free tickets, available later this summer.
