Dragonflies and drought
On an arid day in May 1681, the artist Rochus van Veen witnessed something unusual: the migration of an enormous swarm of dragonflies. Amazed by the sight, Van Veen recorded the event by making a drawing of three insects, providing evidence of an unusual sight that’s become even rarer today.

What’s in a wood?
The iconic Eames House features floor-to-ceiling walls of beautiful golden wood. The aged paneling needed study, evaluation, and treatment. But before conserving an object, you need to know exactly what it’s made of—and in this case, the type of wood was a complete unknown.
What stately, beautiful tree was found under the microscope?

Frozen in Time: The Politics of 17th-Century Dutch Landscapes
Sunday, July 28, 2 pm
Getty Center and online
The exhibition On Thin Ice: Dutch Depictions of Extreme Weather tells a story of persistent global cooling in the 17th-century and shows how artists underscored the fundamental uncertainty of life and the necessity for adaptation in their depictions of ice skating and fishing. This panel discussion invites experts to dive into the meaning of landscape depictions. Rather than seeing these landscapes as merely descriptive, the speakers engage with allegorical interpretations to address political, social, and technological concerns.

A stunning desert view, as framed by an unassuming parking garage…
From Get Inspired subscriber Frank Schaefer:
“While driving back from attending an Antiques Roadshow event, I set aside an hour to photograph the Ivanpah Solar Power Facility in the Mohave Desert. This photo was taken from the seventh floor of Whiskey Pete’s hotel parking garage and shows the three suns of the facility blazing away on a sunny May day.”
