Queen Elizabeth II attended the funeral of her friend Jeanie Margaret Herbert, Countess of Carnarvon Thursday in the south-central English village of Highclere, according to Newbury Today, a local news outlet, and People.
Newbury Today reported that the funeral took place at St. Michael and All Angels Church in Highclere. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because the town’s most famous landmark, Highclere Castle, was the main filming location for PBS’ “Downton Abbey.”
The British monarch, 93, swapped out her typical colorful attire for a more somber ensemble, choosing a black coat with white trim, a black hat with a white bow and a carried matching black bag.
The death of the countess, who died at 83, wasn’t the only sad news the queen received this month.
She also sent her condolences to Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg on the death of his father Jean on Tuesday at age 98. He had abdicated his position as the monarchical head of state in 2000.
“I was tremendously saddened to learn of the death of your father Grand Duke Jean who served your country so well and for so many years,” read her letter, which was shared on Twitter. “I have very fond memories of your father, including from the time he spent in the United Kingdom during the Second World War. As you know, wishing to contribute to the liberation of his country, he volunteered for the British Army, serving with distinction in the Irish Guards of which he was later to become the Colonel of the Regiment.”
