The country that is now considered to have internet freedom as bad as China is Myanmar. This is according to a new report released by Freedom House.
The report, titled “Freedom on the Net 2024,” found that Myanmar’s internet freedom has deteriorated significantly since the military coup in February 2021. The junta has blocked access to independent news sites, enforced widespread internet shutdowns, and cracked down on dissent online.
As a result of these measures, Myanmar is now tied with China for the worst internet freedom score in the world. This is the first time that any country has ranked as low as China in a decade.
The report also found that internet freedom has declined in 27 of the 72 countries it covered. This is the 14th year in a row that global internet freedom has declined.
