If you are looking for a practical and meaningful way to share extra Chinese new year goodies, there are various organizations (many of which are charitable) that you can drop them off at to spread the festive cheer with the different members of our local community. Founded on 1 November 2017, Food Rescue @ Events is a Ground Up initiative that helps food companies and event organisers reduce food wastage through their free services. Doners can give Food Rescue Singapore these extra snacks and the team at will help to redistribute the snacks to those in need. They have various social media platforms such as TikTok and Telegram. Local community group It’s Raining Raincoats is inviting people to share Chinese New Year snacks with migrant workers in Singapore. Members of the public can donate unopened and unexpired Chinese New Year cookies and treats that they wish to give away. The treats will be collected by volunteers around the island and will be passed on to migrant workers at their worksites, construction areas and dormitories. The volunteers are spread across the island, so it’s easy and convenient to drop off the extra snacks. Read more here.
Majulah Belanja is a collaborative initiative between multiple non-profit organisations such as Citizen Adventures, Itsrainingraincoats, Migrant x Me and Singapore Migrant Friends. It first launched during the Circuit Breaker period in 2020 with the aim of aiding migrant workers who were affected by the Covid-19 restrictions. Olio is a free sharing app for members of the community to exchange new or pre-loved items that are in good condition. There is a location-based capability that allows users to see what is available in their neighbourhood or somewhere further afield. See more sharing apps at our article here.
Founded with the aim to end all forms of food insecurity in Singapore. There are more than 80 donation boxes around the island, making it convenient for members of the public to drop off excess food. Unmanned Free Food Pantry is a pop-up food pantry initiative that aims to aid low income neighbourhoods. It was started by business owner Ken Yeo and his family after reading online about free food pantry set-ups overseas. The first Unmanned Free Food Pantry was set up at Spooner Road in the Tanjong Pagar area on 27 August 2020. To donate, you can drop them a message on Facebook to arrange a delivery time.
