Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Canada’s longest-reigning monarch and head of state, passed away Thursday at the age of 96.
“On behalf of the entire Brock community, I’d like to express my sincerest condolences on the passing of Queen Elizabeth II,” says Lynn Wells, Brock University’s Interim President and Vice-Chancellor. “Brock has lowered its flags on campus, and they will remain lowered in remembrance of the Queen until her funeral.”
Queen Elizabeth II visited Niagara twice: in 1951 as princess and in 1973 as Queen.
Among Brock’s connections to the monarch was Arthur Schmon, Chair of the University’s Founder’s Committee. Schmon and his wife Celeste were invited to the Queen’s coronation at Buckingham Palace in 1953, the ticket for which now resides in Brock University Library’s Archives and Special Collections.
