An odd listing for a dress on a UK fashion marketplace sent Singapore’s internet into a frenzy of confusion before the dress eventually got sold.
The iconic Singapore Airlines uniform – real or not – was originally described as a “Vintage African Ankara Dress” by a Depop user who later changed the listing’s description and sold the dress after being called out.
Twitter user Leyla Rose first tweeted about the listing by Depop account Snakecakevintage from London on Tuesday showing the model bent backward on a chair in the dress. It was listed for £49 (S$72).
“Depop is wild… how are you selling a Singapore Airlines uniform and calling it ‘vintage African’??” she wrote.

The tweet soon went viral with over 12,500 likes.
When Coconuts checked this morning, the description had been amended to a more accurate “Vintage Singapore Sarong Kebaya Dress.”
Most commenters were dumbfounded that anyone would buy the uniform and wear it on the daily.
“[Imagine] wearing this as [a] passenger on [Singapore Airlines] flight,” Nraniqh wrote.
“Can you imagine watching some person walk down the street wearing this as everyday wear? They would think I bought a wonderful vintage piece. Nah girl, you bought the Singapore Air dresscode!” @catsandsparkle wrote.
The dress has similar motifs to Singapore Airlines’ Singapore Girl sarong kebaya uniform, which was designed by Parisian couturier Pierre Balmain in 1968.
In April, a traveler highlighted a restaurant in Beijing that tried to promote Singaporean delicacies but ended up missing the mark with awful English and mistranslations. The waitresses at that restaurant were also dressed in similar, Singapore Airlines-inspired uniforms.
