Every team that spends the week preparing to play Francis Parker must comprise a plan to deal with Chris Williams.
The running back-quarterback is the hub of the Lancers’ offense.
And everything else they do.
The Lancers will go as far as Williams can take them this season.
By contrast in the latest game, Williams scored the game’s first touchdown — his lone TD of the game — and added a 25-yard field goal in the third quarter to give Parker the lead for good.
Then his teammates took over in the final quarter with a pair of touchdowns for a 30-14 win to spoil Classical Academy’s homecoming at Escondido High.
Quarterback Jackson Giek threw a 22-yard TD pass with 6:26 to play in the game for a 23-14 lead and he added a three-yard run with 2:37 to go for insurance.
“Now we have something to play for next week,’’ said Williams, who carried 28 times for 202 yards after rushing for 102 yards in the first quarter alone.
The Pacific League football championship might be on the line next Friday when the Lancers (4-4, 2-0) host Escondido Charter in a first-place showdown.
No doubt, the 5-10, 170-pound Williams will be front and center for the Lancers’ bid for a league title.
“He’s our Swiss Army knife,’’ Parker coach Stephen Cooper said. “With that kind of talent, we try to put him in situations to help us.
“Santa Fe Christian threw everything they had at him, but he’s our guy.’’
Not only did Williams run the football, but he passed it a bit. He also kicked off, punted, booted extra points and his interception in the final minutes set up the game’s final score.
“We got more disciplined in the second half,’’ Williams said. “After halftime, we strapped it up. We just didn’t play well in the first half and they ran the ball well on us.
“We did not panic at halftime because we got back to playing our game.’’
In other words, the Lancers leaned on Williams as much as they could.
Parker now has won two of the three meetings with Classical (6-2, 0-1), which had its four-game winning streak snapped.
Classical had given up just 43 points heading into the game.
Parker grabbed the first lead at 7-0 on Williams’ 34-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and kept the lead with Giek’s 5-yard run in the second quarter to break a 7-7 tie.
But Classical Academy, thanks to three penalties, took a short punt at the Lancers’ 46.
Eight plays later, quarterback and homecoming king Luke Sega’s 3-yard jump pass to Jackson Ballou capped off the drive to tie the game at 13-13.
Moments later, Trevor Allen’s conversion kick gave the Caimans their first lead of the game at 14-13.
Williams carried 18 times, mostly from the running back slot, for 157 yards and the first TD.
Life Pollard was Classical’s best weapon with seven carries for 61 yards as well as a 24-yard completion to Sega to the Lancers’ 3, setting up the go-ahead TD with 10 seconds left before halftime.
But the second half was all Parker.
