LUXEMBOURG COVID – In covid news, there are fewer new infections, but a higher incidence rate among the elderly in Luxembourg. According to the Health Directorate’s latest weekly report, 2,384 people got infected with Covid-19 during the week of 17 to 23 October and five deaths were reported. The average age of the deceased was 86 years. The new Covid law, has also gone into effect. That means the isolation period has been reduced from seven to four days. The isolation period can even be abandoned after 24 hours if a person gets negative results in two rapid tests. With the new law coming into effect on Thursday, the contact tracing mechanism is also being stopped.
PETROL PRICE– The price of SP95 petrol will decrease in Luxembourg. With a drop of 2.7 cents per litre, SP95 is now down to €1.69. That’s 29 cents less than diesel, which had dropped at the beginning of the week to below €2.
EU CAR DEAL – The EU has reached a deal to ban new combustion engine cars by 2035. Negotiators from the member states, the European Parliament and the European Commission agreed that carmakers must achieve a 100% cut in CO2 emissions by 2035. It will effectively prohibit the sale of new cars and vans powered by gasoline or diesel in the 27-nation bloc and aim to reduce climate damaging emissions by 55% by 2030 and reach climate neutrality by 2050.
MUSK TWITTER – The world’s richest man, Elon Musk has completed his 44 billion dollar takeover of Twitter. A number of senior executives, including the boss Parag Agrawal are reported to have been sacked. Earlier this year, Musk attempted to back out of the purchase but he announced he would go ahead with the deal, shortly before the dispute was due to go to court.
AMAZON SHARES – Shares in Amazon have tumbled after the online retailer forecast a slowdown in sales growth for the coming festive season. At one point, shares plunged nearly 20% in after- market trade.
UKRAINE ATTACKS – President Volodymyr Zelensky says Russia has launched more than 30 drone attacks on Ukraine in just two days. He added that in total, Moscow has also carried out some 4,500 missile strikes and over 8,000 air raids. Speaking from Kyiv and standing beside what appeared to be a downed Iranian drone, Zelensky pledged to “clip the wings” of Moscow’s air power. Western officials believe Iran has supplied a large number of drones to Russia, but Moscow and Tehran deny it.
ITALY ATTACK – According to local authorities, one person was killed and four others were injured in a knife attack in a shopping centre in the Italian city of Milan. Among the injured is the Spanish footballer Pablo Mari, currently playing for Monza. Investigators have ruled out terrorism, and police have arrested a 46-year-old man with mental health problems.It was reported that he had grabbed a knife from the supermarket shelf before launching the attack.
FORMULA 1 HAMILTON – Lewis Hamilton has said he hopes to sign a new multi-year contract with Mercedes and continue racing in Formula One into his forties. Speaking to reporters ahead of this weekend’s Mexican Grand Prix, the seven-time world champion revealed he was in talks with the team about another multi-year. Hamilton, who will be 38 in January, joined Mercedes in 2013 after starting his F1 career with McLaren in 2007.
FOOTBALL RONALDO – Cristiano Ronaldo scored on his first Manchester United appearance since his refusal to come on as a substitute last week in a 3-0 win over Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League last nigjt. United manager Erik ten Hag left the Portugal forward out of the United squad for Saturday’s draw at Chelsea and he was only allowed to return to first team training this week.
FOOTBALL BUNDESLIGA – And Eintracht Frankfurt host Borussia Dortmund in Saturday’s Bundesliga highlight, with both teams enjoying an improvement in form after difficult moments this season.Frankfurt, who sit in fourth place in the table, are on the cusp of joining Dortmund in the last 16 of the Champions League.
