According to Eurostat, Luxembourg has the highest proportion of young adults with university-level education in the EU.
In 2021, 62.6% of 25 to 34 year-olds in the Grand Duchy had completed tertiary education, which includes university and higher-level college or vocational courses which are enrolled in after secondary school.
This is way above the EU average of 41%, indicating that Luxembourg’s young people are particularly well-educated when compared to their European peers.

The figures for Luxembourg’s neighbours were 50.9% for Belgium, 50.3% for France and 35.7% for Germany.
Bottom of the table were Hungary (32.9%), Italy (28.3%) and Romania (23.3%).
Overall, a larger share of young women across the EU have completed tertiary education compared to men (47% women, 36% men).
This gender gap holds true for Luxembourg as well, with 64.4% of young women having completed tertiary education, compared to 58% of young men.
There is also a clear generation gap. Among 55 to 64 year-olds, 32.1% of the Luxembourg population have completed tertiary education. Unlike with the younger generation, here the gender gap goes the other way: 34.9% of men having reached this threshold, compared to 29.1% of women.
