The extension of the Luxembourg City tram network towards Findel Airport is expected to be completed by 2024.
Four and a half kilometres of rails will have to be installed beyond the current end terminal at Luxexpo in Kirchberg.
Parts of the route will be guided over a motorway bridge behind the tram station in Kirchberg. The bridge will be 108 metres long, ten metres wide, and eight metres high.
Construction is scheduled to start in a few months, according to André Von der Marck, general director of Luxtram.
Two new stops are also in the planning. One will be called Hoehenhof and connect the tram network to both a bus and a park and ride station, while the second stop will be Findel airport.
To make room for the new rails, 3.5 hectares of forest have already had to be removed, but Von der Marck stressed that more than three times as many trees (8.6 hectares) will be planted to compensate.
The tram will be able to reach faster speeds on the route leading to Findel airport, as it leads outside of the city. The stretch is expected to be completed by early 2024.
