The first months of the year saw 40% more overnight stays in Luxembourg’s hotels than in 2021, but the number of people travelling to the Grand Duchy has yet to reach pre-pandemic levels.
Members from the Grand Duchy’s tourism sector are pleased to see a return of activities, but overnight stays are still down by 30% compared to 2019. Nevertheless, the tendency is increasing by 2 to 3% each week, which still gives rise to hope.
Tourism in Luxembourg City was hit harder by the pandemic than in the country’s rural regions. 70% of business-related tourism in Luxembourg happens in the capital. However, hotels in Luxembourg City are currently seeing more weekend reservations than ever.
City officials further plan on attracting tourists with the return of the big summer events, such as the National Day celebrations and the Schueberfouer. Furthermore, the Casemates, one of the capital’s biggest attractions, will reopen on 5 June, also known as Whitsunday.

Sebastian Reddeker from ‘Luxembourg for Tourism’ explained that advertising was much more targeted during the pandemic, as many regular activities were no longer on offer. Now, the whole Grand Duchy is being promoted again, he noted, and aside from the popular Mullerthal region, city tourism is back on the rise as well.
Most tourists come from Luxembourg’s neighbouring countries and from the Netherlands. The number of people coming to visit from the United States and from South America is also on the rise. However, people from Asian countries still seem more reluctant to make a trip to the Grand Duchy.
