The new tower should guarantee that no water shortages occur in the growing district.
Construction work has already been launched and officials estimate that the project will be completed in November 2023. The tower, which will have a capacity of 1,000 cubic metres, will be built in a so-called “Natura 2000 zone”, a nature reserve.
Architects designed the tower in a way that it should seamlessly integrate into the forest. The wood making up its outer layer comes from Luxembourgish forests, which reinforces the natural look. Furthermore, the tower has been designed to create a new habitat for local animals.
So far, the Kirchberg district fully relies on water from the Senningerberg reservoir. The new tower should guarantee that no shortages occur in the growing district. 4,000 people have already moved into new residential quarters, and more are expected to follow over the coming years and decades. City officials believe that close to 30,000 people will live in Kirchberg in the future.
Up until now, Luxembourg City has to rely on three water towers: one in Bonnevoie, one in Cessange, and one near Cloche d’Or. The construction project for the new tower is estimated to cost €11 million.
