According to eyewitnesses, shots were heard in the municipality of Niederkorn at around 10 am. The police later confirmed two deaths along with the arrest of the suspect.
A 74-year-old man was arrested in relation to the incident, the public prosecutor’s office stated on Monday afternoon.
The authorities confirmed that the shooting resulted in two casualties, a man aged 54 and a woman aged 62. The prosecutor’s office said the two victims were neighbours of the suspect and were killed outside their home.
Shortly before midday on Monday, police confirmed that the two victims had been shot on Rue de Triveres.
Initial reports suggest the shooting followed a disagreement between neighbours. It is not yet known how the shooter came to possess the fire arm, nor has it yet been confirmed what type of weapon was used.
According to traffic information there was a police operation involving special units with heavily armed officers on Rue Pierre Ganzen. The road later reopened at around 11.20am, allowing access to fire fighters.
An eyewitness said they had heard three loud bangs, as if something had exploded, followed by the sound of someone screaming. When the witness looked out of their window, they saw two people laying in the street.
A second eyewitness said the shooter was a retired man who had been sweeping his driveway just before the incident took place and had even greeted the witness as they passed by. The shooter had never previously been associated with anything negative, the witness added, but there were rumours of long-standing arguments between the man and the murdered couple, who lived in an apartment next door.
Speaking to RTL, a witness claimed they had seen two men and a woman at the scene of the incident, when one of the men produced a firearm, firing multiple shots at the other two people. The shooter then fled back inside his house.
A resident in the area who also spoke to RTL reporters said she had been frightened at the unusual number of police vehicles in the area, but “(I) didn’t hear anything, it must be quite serious. Especially since there is a daycare in this street, and when the weather is nice the children go out.”
Another witness working in a nearby street said they had not seen anything until the police cars arrived, and that such an incident was unheard of in the area.
