Thousands of anti-government protesters returned to the streets of Moldova’s capital to express their dismay amid an acute winter energy crisis and skyrocketing inflation. The protesters converged Sunday in the capital, Chisinau, calling for an early election and the resignation of Moldova’s pro-Western President Maia Sandu. Moldova has taken a distinctly Western-oriented path over the last year, but over the past two months, a protests initiated by the populist Shor Party have rocked the country. The Shor Party’s leader, Ilan Shor, is a Moldovan oligarch currently in exile in Israel. The U.S. says he is working with Russian interests to create political unrest in Moldova, Europe’s poorest country.

State media says Iran’s Revolutionary Court has sentenced an anti-government protester to death, and handed down jail terms to five others. The ruling likely marks the first death sentence in the trials of those arrested for participating in protests that have swept Iran over the past weeks demanding an end to clerical rule. Mizan, a news website is linked to Iran’s judiciary, said the death sentence followed on charges of the protester setting fire to a government building. The five prison terms ranged from five to 10 years. Security forces, including paramilitary volunteers with the Revolutionary Guard, have violently cracked down on the demonstrations, killing over 300 people, including dozens of children, according to the Oslo-based Iran Human Rights.

Where just last week there was fear in Kherson, now there is an abundance of joy. That emotion is bursting out even though there is no power, no water and barely any cellphone coverage in the southern Ukrainian city that was liberated in the last few days. Life promises to be tough for weeks to come, as winter bites down. Russia’s poisoned parting gifts were destroying key infrastructure and seeding deadly booby traps. Still, at least hope and happiness are back, which will more than do for now. In scenes reminiscent of cities liberated by Allied forces in World War II, Kherson residents are pouring into the city’s central square, honking car horns, dancing, weeping and hugging.

Tommy Fleetwood saved his best for last with a final-round 67 to come from behind and retain his title at the Nedbank Golf Challenge as he ended a three-year winless drought. The Englishman moved up from a tie for seventh overnight to finish 11 under par overall and win by a stroke from New Zealand’s Ryan Fox. Fox was hoping to overtake Rory McIlroy at the top of the season rankings with a victory in Sun City but just missed out after making a bogey on the last. Fleetwood won in Sun City in 2019 but was the defending champion after the 2020 and 2021 tournaments were canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy’s next superintendent will be the first woman appointed to the position in the institution’s nearly 80-year history. The U.S. Transportation Department announced Saturday that retired U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral Joanna Nunan will take the helm at the 1,000-person academy in Kings Point, Long Island in a few weeks. She is succeeding Jack Buono, who resigned in June. Nunan retired this year as the Coast Guard’s Deputy for Personnel Readiness. She will take over a Merchant Marine Academy that’s been racked by sexual misconduct allegations in recent years. The academy trains graduates to work in the commercial shipping industry.
The United Nations says it is investigating allegations of misconduct by Egyptian police officers providing security at this year’s international climate talks. This follows claims that attendees of events at the German pavilion at the COP27 summit were photographed and filmed after Germany hosted an event there with the sister of a jailed Egyptian pro-democracy activist, Alaa Abdel Fattah. The U.N. climate office confirmed that some of the security officers working in the part of the venue designated as United Nations territory come from the host country, Egypt. The U.N. climate office told The Associated Press in a statement that the U.N. safety and security department “has been made aware of allegations” of misconduct and “is investigating these reports.”
The Tennessee Titans will have quarterback Ryan Tannehill back against the Denver Broncos after the 11-year veteran missed the past two games with a sprained right ankle. The Titans will need the veteran with cornerback Kristian Fulton becoming the fifth Tennessee defensive starter declared out against Denver. Tannehill sprained his right ankle Oct. 23 in a win over Indianapolis. Rookie Malik Willis replaced him and went 1-1 in Tannehill’s absence. The Broncos, who rank 30th in the NFL in scoring, will be without wide receiver KJ Hamler. Denver also scratched safety Justin Simmons with an injured knee.
Authorities say a robbery suspect and a grocery clerk fatally shot each other during an attempted holdup. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office says the shootings Friday evening inside the El Barakah Supermarket in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood killed 24-year-old would-be robber Nicholas Williams and 63-year-old clerk Ali Hassan of Berwyn. Police say Williams entered the store and produced a handgun in an attempt to rob the store, but Hassan pulled a gun from his waistband and shot Williams in the chest. Williams returned fire and shot Hassan in the chest and back. Police say Williams ran from the store but collapsed and died.

A once-luxurious Miami Beach hotel that hosted the Beatles and President John F. Kennedy during its 1960s heyday has been imploded. The 17-story Deauville Hotel fell into itself Sunday after a series of explosions were set off, sending up a large cloud of dust. The hotel was built in 1957 and Kennedy spoke there to the Young Democrats Convention in 1961. The Beatles performed there in 1964, recording six songs for “The Ed Sullivan Show.” The property fell into disrepair over the years and was closed in 2017 after an electrical fire. The property’s future is unclear after voters on Tuesday rejected plans for a high-rise hotel and condo tower.

Aston Villa recovered from a goal conceded in the opening minute to earn its first away victory of the season by beating Brighton 2-1 to hand new manager Unai Emery a second straight Premier League win. Danny Ings scored both goals for Villa. He equalized with a first-half penalty and then netted the winner in the 54th minute with a low deflected shot that snuck inside the near post. Emery has now overseen league wins over Manchester United and Brighton since taking over from Steven Gerrard.
Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen is active but it’s unclear if he’ll start against the Minnesota Vikings. He hurt his right elbow, which is his throwing elbow, last week against the Jets. Allen had been listed as questionable after practicing on a limited basis on Friday. He also had missed the previous two practices. If Allen does not get the start Sunday, the Bills will go with journeyman backup Case Keenum.

Top-seeded Rafael Nadal and Taylor Fritz of the United States are in the same group and play each other later. Novak Djokovic, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev complete the lineup in Turin.

There will be only four weeks before the Dec. 6 runoff in Georgia between Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock and Republican Herschel Walker for U.S. Senate. Factoring in the Thanksgiving holiday, many Georgians are likely to be offered only five weekdays of early in-person voting beginning Nov. 28. The primary runoffs held in June showed the time for mail ballots to be received and returned can be very tight. Those changes could produce lower turnout and give Republicans clear advantages. But the runoff next month won’t be for Senate control. Democrats kept control of the Senate on Saturday with the victory of Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto in Nevada.
A shooting outside a Florida high school football game has left one person dead and sent players and spectators scrambling to safety. Orlando’s Jones High School was finishing a Saturday night playoff victory over Wekiva High when a gunman fired several shots in the parking lot during an altercation between two groups. The Orlando Sentinel reported that after the shots, players and spectators fled to the opposite side of the stadium. Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith said officers found one adult dead and another wounded. Four juveniles were arrested, including one carrying a gun. No charges were immediately filed and no names have been released.
Holiday celebrants in Hilo, Hawaii, might notice something different about the traditional Yule Log cake from the Short ’N Sweet bakery this year. Maria Short typically makes her popular $35 bûche de Noël with two logs combined to look like a branch. This year, thanks to soaring prices for eggs and butter and other costs, she’s downsizing to one straight Yule log. Higher prices are hitting everyone this holiday, but food vendors are seeing some of the biggest increases. Small businesses that count on food-centric holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas are bracing for a difficult season.
Ricardo Pepi has scored in his first game since being bypassed for the U.S. World Cup roster. It put Groningen ahead in a 3-2 loss to Fortuna Sittard in the Dutch Eredivisie. Pepi is a 19-year-old from El Paso, Texas. He has six goals in nine league matches and seven goals overall since he was loaned to Groningen from Germany’s Augsburg. Pepi was left off the U.S. roster by coach Gregg Berhalter in favor of forwards Jesús Ferreira, Josh Sargent and Haji Wright.
An election win for abortion supporters in Kentucky will be tested this week when the state’s Supreme Court considers the state’s abortion ban. It’s the first legal test for abortion rights after midterm elections in which voters across the country came down on the side of keeping abortion legal. Supporters in Kentucky say the high court should consider the failure of a proposed amendment that would have ensured there was no right to abortion in the constitution. Supporters in Michigan and Vermont are hoping that Democratic majorities in legislatures will further protections for abortion.
A memorial to the 20 first graders and six educators killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting has opened to the public, a month before the 10th anniversary of the massacre. No ceremony was planned Sunday at the site a short distance from the school. It has become a custom in Newtown on anniversaries and other remembrances of the shooting to mark them with quiet reflection. Relatives of the victims were given a private tour of the grounds on Saturday. Paths at the memorial lead to a water feature with a sycamore tree in the middle and the victims’ names engraved on the top of a surrounding supporting wall.

The lawyer of a great-nephew of the late Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein says her client has no links with the Islamic State group though Iraqi authorities alleged his involvement. The lawyer told The Associated Press Sunday that her client, Abdullah Yasser Sabaawi, was living in Yemen in June 2014, when IS fighters massacred hundreds of Iraqi troops in central Iraq. The lawyer said Lebanese authorities handed over Abdallah to Iraq on Friday despite the fact that he had been registered as a refugee in Lebanon. Iraqi authorities have sought to link Saddam’s great-nephew with the massacre of Iraqi soldiers by IS militants in 2014.
President Joe Biden’s granddaughter Naomi Biden is getting ready to be the bride at the 19th wedding in White House history. She is set to marry fiance Peter Neal in a ceremony on the South Lawn on Saturday. Half of the previous 18 weddings were for a president’s daughter. Nieces, a grandniece, a son, siblings of a first lady, White House staff and even a sitting president have also tied the knot there, too.
The U.K fell silent for two minutes on Remembrance Sunday as King Charles III led the nation in honoring servicemen and women who lost their lives in past conflicts. Big Ben chimed 11 times to mark the start of the silence as thousands of veterans, including some who had served during World War II looked on solemnly under gray London skies. The commemoration included a march past by 10,000 veterans and a laying of wreaths at the Cenotaph, London’s war memorial. This is the first time the commemoration — always a key highlight of the royal calendar — has been led by Charles as monarch. His mother, Queen Elizabeth II, died in September.
