UNITED NATIONS – President Donald Trump said Wednesday his administration will offer a Mideast peace plan in the next two to four months and he reaffirmed U.S. support for recognizing Palestine as a state as part of a peace process.
Speaking to reporters ahead of a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump said his administration is making progress on the plan. For the first time he offered a more specific timeline for when he hopes to announce a proposal.
“It is a dream of mine to be able to get that done prior to the end of my first term,” said Trump, who is attending his second United Nations General Assembly this week.
Pressed for a more specific timeline on a peace proposal, Trump said he hoped to announce something in the next “two to three to four months.”
Trump drew criticism for moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem this year and also for significantly cutting foreign aid to Palestinians.
“I like two-state solution,” Trump said. “That’s what I think works best.”
