Police claim a woman was raped just metres from fellow partygoers a Cable Beach ‘doof’ event after she walked behind a dune to go to the toilet.
The 31-year-old was among around 100 to 200 people who attended the party at the popular Broome beach on Saturday night.
WA Police Senior Sergeant Brian Beck said she was attacked by an unknown man and fell to the ground.
“It occurred within sight, just behind a dune, from where the event was, within a matter of metres from where there were people gathered listening to music,” he said.
“The act itself was quite horrendous, she was seriously assaulted and obviously sexually assaulted as well.
“After the event the suspect has taken off into the dunes and the victim, who was quite badly injured, has alerted event organisers and from there she’s been conveyed to the hospital.”
WAtoday understands police are investigating whether the woman was attacked with a rock due to the severity of her injuries.
Beck said police did not believe the man was an attendee at the party, with unregulated beach ‘doofs’ common in the tourist town, and typically organised in closed social media groups.
“Police have very little knowledge around locations and when these events are on,” he said.
“Given that these sort of incidents can occur and the fact that they draw drugs and alcohol, and potentially violence [we would like to].”
The attacker has been described by police as being dark-skinned with a slim build and about 177 centimetres tall, however the attack occurred in darkness.
Vision of the party shows disco lights lighting up attendees on an otherwise dark and isolated beach.
Police are urging anyone who saw the incident or who has phone vision of the event to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report online to www.crimestoppers.com.au.
