Coastal areas in Jakarta, including Ancol beach, have been declared safe following the Sunda Strait tsunami that devastated Serang, Pandeglang and South Lampung on Dec. 22, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has said.
BNPB spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said the agency had coordinated with the management of Taman Impian Jaya Ancol (Ancol Dreamland) in North Jakarta regarding the matter, kompas.com reported on Wednesday,
"The Sunda Strait tsunami won't reach Ancol. Infomation on the occurrence of high waves, which are affected by the weather and the sea [state], is available on the BMKG website," Sutopo said in a statement, referring to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency.
The BMKG's Wednesday forecast for areas that could experience high waves included the southern parts of Sumatra and Java, the northern parts of Kalimantan and Sulawesi and the northern part of Papua. The northern part of Java was forecast for "slight sea state", or waves 0.5 to 1.25 meters high.

The Ancol Dreamland management is said to have prepared a standard operational procedure for emergencies, including natural disasters. During high waves, its lifeguards are to issue a public announcement to advise visitors to keep within the designated swimming area and to watch children who are in the water. Along with security officers, the lifeguards are also ready to direct visitors to a safe location in the event of an emergency.
"Our priority is the safety and security of visitors," said Ancol Dreamland vice president Sunarto.
Among the park's assembly points are the Carnaval parking lot, the central and east parking lots, the Allianz Ecopark parking lot and the Dunia Fantasi (Dufan) parking lot. All entry gates to Ancol are part of the emergency evacuation route. (kes)
