TECUMSEH — It’s that time again. The Downtown Tecumseh Summer Beach Party and Sand Sculpture event is coming to town Friday, July 22 and Saturday, July 23.
There will be five sand sculptures completed by Ice Creations of Napoleon, Ohio. They will be out on the sidewalk and sculpting from 25 tons of sand. The sculptors will begin their work on Friday and finish on Saturday.
Also, on Friday there will be live musicians downtown throughout the day and there will be a kids activity area with games and a coloring mural.
At 6 p.m. Friday, adults can register on site in the southwest downtown parking lot for the cornhole tournament that is taking place as part of a collaboration between Killshots Cornhole of Adrian and Tecumseh’s parks and recreation department.
For the advanced level, the cost per person is $20 and for the less competitive folks there is a backyard level at a cost of $15 per person. There will be a blind draw for partners, so no one will know who their partner is until just before the event starts at 7 p.m. At the end there will be monetary prizes for the winners. The amount of the prizes will depend on how many registrations there are.
On Saturday there will be a pet parade at 10 a.m. which goes down the main street and starts and stops at the First Presbyterian Church. Those wanting to enter their pets into the parade should go to the Downtown Tecumseh Facebook page and fill out the entry form there. Judging will begin at 9:15 a.m. and the theme this year is “Top Hats and Tiaras.”
“It’s a red-carpet event. We are rolling out the red carpet for the pets and will have Pets in Focus on hand to take pictures of the pets,” Tecumseh Marketing Director Rhonda Nowak said.
At 11 a.m. on Saturday, the sidewalk chalk drawing competition will begin. Participants must register in advance. There is an entry form on the Downtown Tecumseh Facebook page. There are two age groups; 1-12 and 13 and up. Drawings must be completed by 5 p.m. Then visitors can go to that Facebook page and vote for their favorites.
“We are having a shopping raffle during the event. When you make a purchase at a participating merchant, you will receive a raffle ticket to fill out and it will be entered into a drawing for Chamber Bucks. We’ll be giving three of those away at the end of the event,” Nowak said, noting that each check would be for $25. “Some of our local merchants will have specials going on during this whole weekend. Be sure to stop into the shops while you are downtown.
The Beach Party is just a good time for people of all ages, including groups of friends, families with young and older children, and anyone who wants to get out and have fun.
“I would like to encourage everyone to come out and enjoy all the festivities and enjoy our beautiful community,” Nowak said.
