Huawei is currently sending EMUI 12 to eligible smartphone owners and there have been a lot of devices that have already downloaded and installed the latest EMUI version. However, we’re aware the discussion on EMUI 13 is still on the sidelines including its base Android operating system.
As of now, benchmark and software details have shown that EMUI 12 is based on Android 10, which is an old Android version. However, since the latest Android version may affect devices such as Huawei P30 and Mate 20 series’ access to Google Mobile Services (GMS), the company has refrained from bringing a new Android build even if it could the AOSP project.
Since Huawei has decided to keep HarmonyOS exclusive for the Chinese smartphone models, the global users are directed towards Android. This means, the next version of EMUI – EMUI 13, would still be running Android and if possible then it could feature Android 12.
Why Android 12?
As found in the previous report, Huawei has been experimenting with Android 12 support for HarmonyOS 3.0 and the developer beta has been quite supportive of this finding. Therefore, the Chinese tech maker has used the stable Android Open Source Project of Android 12 and included its libraries in HarmonyOS 3.0.
Why not Android 13?
The development of HarmonyOS 3.0 has been started last year, and Huawei confirmed this progress at Huawei Developer Conference 2021. Thereafter, the company began testing it on smartphones and the launch will happen for smartphones on July 27.
Meanwhile, Android 13 has not been released and its stable Open Source Project is yet to come. Hence, Huawei has chosen to stick with Android 12 in the meantime.
Moreover, Huawei is not backed by Android (officially), and it has to fetch the open source Android project. That’s why, if Huawei chooses to select a new Android version for EMUI 13, then it would be Android 12 but it could also be Android 13 based on the time of the development of this software.
At the moment, Huawei has not revealed anything about EMUI 13 or it’s upcoming but we’ll keep you posted on further remarks.
