The Changan Shenlan SL03 launched in China with three different powertrains. It is available as EV, EREV (range extender), and FCEV (hydrogen). Its cheapest version costs only 168,900 RMB (25,000 USD). But the most expensive Shenlan SL03 has a price tag of 699 900 RMB (103,665 USD). Why is its price range so wide? Let’s sort it out together.
Shenlan is a fresh brand that CATL, Changan New Energy and Huawei jointly run. As for The Changan Shenlan SL03, it is a compact sedan, based on the EPA1 platform. Its dimensions are 4820/1890/1480 mm, with a wheelbase of 2900 mm. So the SL03 is 106 mm longer than the Tesla Model 3. As mentioned, it goes with three different powertrains (EV, EREV, FCEV). Anyway, all of them have an electric motor on the rear axle. So the SL03 is RWD only. Its power output is 160 kW (218 hp) or 190 kW (258 hp) depending on the version.
The interior of the Changan Shenlan SL03 looks modern and simple with a 14.6-inch screen, a sporty steering wheel with a flat bottom, a wireless charging pad, and two cup holders. The main screen of the SL03 can turn 15 degrees left or right. Other interior features of this vehicle include the 1.9-square-meter sunroof, 14 Sony speakers, an AR-HUD, etc.
The Shenlan SL03 got 34 different sensors, including one ‘4D’ LiDAR sensor. Its self-driving system comprises NID 3.0 and APA 7.0 systems.
The SL03 EREV is the entry-level model. It has a price tag of 168,900 RMB (25,000 USD). Its powertrain comprises a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated ICE (JL473QJ) for 70 kW (95 hp). This engine only charges the battery. And, as we get to the battery, it is LFP for 28.39 kWh. The pure electric range of the SL03 reaches 200 km (CLTC). With a range extender on, it can run up to 1,200 km.
The electric motor of the SL03 generates 160 kW (218 hp) and 320 Nm. With it on board, it can speed up from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds.
The SL03 EV got two versions with a price range between 183,900-215,900 RMB (27,285-31,980 USD). The cheaper one goes with the electric motor of 190 kW (258 hp) and 320 Nm. With it on board, the Shenlan SL03’s zero-to-hundred acceleration is only 5.9 seconds. As for the battery, it is ternary (NMC) for 58.1 kWh. This version has a 515 km of CLTC range.
The second trim level is equipped with the less powerful electric motor. Its output reaches 160 kW (218 hp) and 320 Nm. As a result, the SL03 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds. As for the battery, it is also ternary, but has a larger capacity of 79.97 kWh for 705 km of CLTC range.
The FCEV version of the Shenlan SL03 is the most quirky one, mainly because of its high price tag of 699,900 RMB (103,665 USD). For this amount of money you can buy four SL03s with range extender. It has a motor with a power output of 160 kW (218 hp) and an LFP battery of 28.39 kWh. Its hydrogen consumption reaches 0.65 kg/100km. Shenlan also shared that every kilometer of the SL03 FCEV costs only 0.2 RMB (0.03 USD). So it is really efficient. But its price tag is obviously too high.
The Shenlan SL03 became a huge success in China, selling 10,000 vehicles in 30 minutes. Its main reason is a range of different pre-sale benefits. Only clients who ordered the vehicle in 48 hours can get them. We can underline such benefits as a 10-year or 300,000-km warranty, free internet connection for entertainment for 5 years (10 G/month), an exclusive color (Nebula Blue), etc. It seems that these benefits become very attractive to customers.
