Back to school season is here for Des Plaines Elementary School Dist. 62, opening its doors to a year that welcomes a new superintendent, 3,576 students and 364 teachers back to school.
An additional 434 students and 44 teachers from Dist. 62 already started at the year-round Iroquois Community School on July 13 and July 14.
“Iroquois had an extremely smooth start, extremely smooth. Everyone was engaged, present, and very happy to be there,” Dist. 62 Director of Community Relations Jen Bova said. “We could feel that energy when we walked in the school, which is a great insight to what this school year could look like.”
Dist. 62 first through eighth grade students were set to start at the district’s 10-month schools Monday, Aug. 15. Included are Algonquin Middle School, Chippewa Middle School, Central Elementary, Cumberland Elementary, Forest Elementary, North Elementary, Orchard Place Elementary, Plainfield Elementary, South Elementary and Terrace Elementary schools.
Preschool and kindergarten students started on Tuesday, Aug. 16.
The new superintendent for Dist. 62, Michael Amadei, has been busy preparing for the new year. “I’m very excited to begin the school year as your superintendent of schools. I’m feeling invigorated about the future of our district and all the work we are doing as it relates to our five-year strategic plan,” Amadei said. “I look forward to supporting our students, families and staff as we remain focused on maintaining a united front here in Dist. 62.”
Dist. 62 is in the last year of a five-year strategic plan. This plan, according to the district, supports goals for student growth and achievement, learning and work environments, family and community connections, while providing resources for learning and career development.
Safety in school is also a top priority in Dist. 62. “We will be taking a pre-emptive focus on keeping our learning community safe. I have had engaging conversations with the Des Plaines Police Department that I know will lead to more innovative approaches as it pertains to the issue of safety and security here in Dist. 62,” Amadei said.
As far as COVID-19, Dist. 62 states it will be mandating an optional mask-wearing learning environment. One other new pandemic change is the district will not conduct SHIELD mass testing in schools, but tests are still available for staff and students who complete an opt-in form. Students and staff are encouraged to stay at home when sick.
“I know these last two years have been nothing short of challenging, but I am very optimistic about this school year,” Amadei said. “I intend to be present and available throughout the district, connecting with students and families. Understanding what is happening in our schools, buildings and throughout the district will be one of my priorities this year as it aligns with my focus on developing relationships with families and community.”
