Cambridge City manager Robbie Nightingale has been delighted with the impact made by two of his new arrivals – and he is hoping that a returning familiar face will also hit the ground running.
Daniel Cotton, who joined from Yaxley, has scored on all three appearances so far – including the winner in Saturday’s 1-0 Pitching In Northern League Midlands Division victory at Chasetown Town.
Tom Waumsley, meanwhile, has found the back of the net on two occasions during his three outings for the Lilywhites since signing on the dotted line from Stamford.
And City’s attacking ranks have been further boosted this week by a reunion with Jarid Robson, who left the club in the summer to link up with Step 3 outfit Royston Town.
On Cotton and Waumsley, Nightingale said: “They’re both very experienced. Some people may have looked at when we signed them, seen they were in their 30s and questioned why we’ve got them in.
“But they bring so much experience, they’ve scored goals wherever they’ve been and ultimately the proof is in the pudding.
“They’ve settled in so quickly and really hit the ground running.
“Against Loughborough they both scored and that’s a game we may have lost in the past. The story of our season has been dominating games but not making the most of it – now that is starting to change.
“When you’re not taking your chances it just takes one switch off at the back and you’ve lost the game 1-0. That’s how it’s been but we look a different side now.”
As for Robson, the midfielder with an eye for goal was a popular member of Nightingale’s squad prior to his summer departure.
Nightingale said: “We didn’t want to lose Jarid but we understood why he wanted to make the move.
“Losing him was taking 15 or so goals out of our team from midfield and that’s a lot.
“As soon as we heard he was available we had to make sure we got him back.
“The beauty of Jarid is that he can be the poorest player on the pitch and still score two or three goals.
“He’s got such a great work ethic, he provides real quality and you can never have enough of that.
“He’s actually cut from a similar cloth to Tom and Dan. They’ve got that hunger and a real team ethic. We’re looking forward to having Jarid back.”
City head into Saturday’s (November 26) home clash with Bedworth United on a run of four victories from their last five games in all competitions.
“We always knew the results would turn once we started scoring goals,” said Nightingale.
“The only defeat we’ve had recently came at Stamford and they’ve lost just once all season.
“We’re getting good results and it feels like we’re in a really good place at the moment.
“Nothing is a given in this league. It’s one of the toughest I’ve been involved in and it’s so congested.
“But if we can come off of the next couple of matches with positive results then that will really set us up going into the Christmas period and next year.”
