When completed, the port, which is being developed in four phases, will be able to handle up to 65m teu annually
TUAS Port in Singapore is ramping up operations and will open three more berths by the end of the year, the city-state’s transport ministry has said.
When completed in the 2040s, the huge multi-billion dollar port hub, which is being developed in four phases, will be able to handle up to 65m teu annually, almost double the volume of 37.5m teu handled in 2021.
The first two berths started operating in the past December. Tuas Port will eventually have 66 berths, the ministry said in a statement.
More than 2,500 local workers have been recruited to boost its workforce by around 20%, senior minister says
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore started phase one reclamation works in February 2015 and completed them in November 2021.
Phase one operations will have 21 deepwater berths with the capacity to handle 20m teu annually when fully operational in 2027.
Phase two’s reclamation works began in March 2018. The MPA has started the planning for phase three.
Container port operator PSA is expecting to move all its operations at Tanjong Pagar, Keppel, and Brani terminals to Tuas Port by 2027.
Operations at Pasir Panjang Terminal will be consolidated at Tuas Port by the 2040s.
“When completed 20 years from now, we will have the world’s largest fully automated port. And that should make us the global leading player in the maritime space,” Singapore’s prime minister Lee Hsien Loong said in a national day speech yesterday.
“A decade ago, Asia was growing strongly, and we anticipated that PSA’s business will grow with it. The existing terminals at Brani and Pasir Panjang were working fine, but we decided nevertheless to consolidate our the port operations into one mega port — Tuas,” prime minister Lee said.
“Because we planned ahead, our ports are able to handle extra volume, during the pandemic.
“While ports over the world were experiencing closures, severe congestion, and long delays, our ports remained open 24/7 throughout.
“We also reinforce Singapore’s position as the catch-up port, because this is where vessels can make up time for delays elsewhere,” prime minister Lee said.
As it has set about bedding into Tuas, PSA has modernised and upgraded its port operations.
The new port is automated and digitalised. It uses artificial intelligence to co-ordinate operations more seamlessly, including vessel-traffic management and port clearance, prime minister Lee said.
Instead of trucks with drivers, it deploys trucks with automated guided vehicles.
