Many people in Indonesia, Singapore and around the world were moved by a recent TikTok featuring photos of a teary-eyed girl and chocolate bread.
Posted on Feb. 10, the slideshow TikTok conveyed how touching it was for a father to gift his child a simple packet of chocolate bread as a birthday present, with a handwritten note promising to buy something more expensive when he can afford it.
The note read:
“Happy birthday. I only have enough to buy this for you to eat. When I have more, I’ll buy for you the more expensive ones. I’ll be home late, take care of your younger sibling.”
“Happy birthday. I only have enough to buy this for you to eat. When I have more, I’ll buy for you the more expensive ones. I’ll be home late, take care of your younger sibling.”
The TikTok has been viewed some 1.4 million times, with more than 225,000 likes.
Responses to the TikTok were unanimously in praise of the person who gifted the chocolate bread, with many assuming the girl featured was posting about her own father.
Some responses even offered to reach out to help her out financially.
Based on her profile, she appears to be based in Indonesia.
Chocolate bread birthday present a meme
However, not everyone was in for the ride.
A small number of naysayers pointed out that the photo of the chocolate bread bears a watermark of another username, suggesting it was posted by another TikTok account previously.
Simply searching for “kekoenaktau” online retrieved a profile belonging to another TikToker.
It turns out, @kekoenaktau had posted the same content on Feb. 7 — three days earlier than @syashawtyy.
Her slideshow TikTok has been viewed more than 655,000 times, and has about 63,000 likes.
Both @kekoenaktau and @syashawtyy used the same caption, “No one make me sad, but”.
Where did photo come from?
It turns out, the photo of the chocolate bread with the heartfelt note was tweeted in December 2022.

The tweet blew up at that time, with some articles highlighting that it left people feeling sad but grateful to their own fathers.
