Online legal education could take a major step forward if Purdue’s push is successful to allow graduates of its online law school to take the bar exam.
Currently, only California allows graduates of fully online law schools to take the bar exam. But online legal education has gained traction since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. More than a dozen ABA-accredited law schools now offer JD programs that are primarily online in addition to their in-person programs.
In a February report, a working group in Indiana said affordability and diversity are factors weighing in favor of the change, but it also noted that online law school might drive down the state’s bar pass rate.
