PALO ALTO, CA — A man suspected of the sexual assault of a woman in Palo Alto last weekend was taken into custody on Tuesday, authorities said.
Daniel Widyanto Condronimpuno, 34, of Palm Beach, Fla., was booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of several felonies, including attempted rape by force, sexual penetration by force, assault with an intent to commit rape, forcible sexual battery, false imprisonment, battery, assault with deadly weapon and robbery, the police said.
Palo Alto police received a call around 2:49 p.m. on Sunday from a passerby who discovered a woman who had been sexually assaulted under the California Avenue pedestrian underpass.
According to police, the woman had been walking her bicycle east through the underpass when she was passed by a man walking the opposite direction. The woman was struck from behind, fell to the ground and was assaulted. When she yelled for help, the man stole her cell phone and fled.
On Tuesday morning, detectives from the Palo Alto Police Department spoke with investigators at UC Berkeley, who said they believed they might have a suspect in the Sunday attack under observation. At 12:40 p.m., UCPD officers arrested Condronimpuno on campus at Memorial Glade.
