Six Cambodian students stranded in Sudan are currently in a safe place, waiting for evacuation, An Sokkhoeurn, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said yesterday.
According to Sokkhoeurn, the six students – four men and two women – have been studying at a university in Khartoum, Sudan.
He added that after bloody clashes erupted in Khartoum on April 15, university officials gathered all the international students in a safe place at the university.
He said that through coordination with the Malaysian Embassy and regular contacts with the Cambodian Embassy in Cairo, Egypt, the six Cambodian students are sheltering with Malaysian students.
They are awaiting an evacuation from Sudan.
He noted that as of Monday night, Malaysian officials have coordinated to arrange a means of transportation for their departure from Sudan as soon as possible.
Prime Minister Hun Sen on Monday asked Othsman Hassan, Senior Minister and Chairman of the Cambodian Muslim Development Fund, to do his best to ensure the safe evacuation of the six Cambodian students.
“When Malaysia starts evacuating their citizens, please ask them to evacuate our students together,” Mr Hun Sen said.
Hassan said yesterday, “We don’t know yet exactly when our Cambodian students in Sudan will be evacuated.”
He added, “We haven’t arranged their departure yet due to the tense situation in Khartoum, but they are okay and in a safe situation.”
