MEMPHIS, Tenn.– A workplace romance at an East Memphis hotel led to shots fired inside the building Tuesday evening.
It happened at the DoubleTree Memphis Hotel on Sanderlin Road around 6:20 p.m.
Police said initially the call came across as an active shooter but that wasn’t the case.
A hotel manager told officers 36-year-old Antonio Lewis started arguing with another employee who liked the same woman. Hours after almost getting into a fight, police say Lewis was seen on surveillance video going out of the employee entrance.
According to Memphis Police, Antonio Lewis went to a Chrysler Crossfire to get a gun and returned to the kitchen where police say he fired a shot at the ceiling before firing four shots at the manager and other employees.
No one was injured.
“I don’t think you should want to come to your job and shoot up the place over a lover’s quarrel. You know it doesn’t make sense,” said Antonio Page, a Memphis resident.
Detectives said Lewis went back inside and dropped off the gun. He then walked back inside the hotel, stayed briefly, then left, getting into the same Chrysler and driving away.
Police said Lewis was later taken into custody by MPD’s Scorpion Unit.
Kelly Bean who is staying at the hotel while visiting from Nashville said she’s now on high alert.
“It makes you uneasy because things can happen anytime anywhere so I’m more aware than I used to because of those kind of things even hearing this now makes me think a little bit more as I walk into the hotel,” Bean said. “I just stay out of anything work-related you don’t do stuff like that because you never know what’ll happen.”
Lewis was charged with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment.
He is out on a $25,000 bond and is due in court on September 7.
We did reach out to DoubleTree but were told they can’t comment on an open investigation.
