Plans have been submitted for a boarding accommodation scheme in Cardiff Bay for Cardiff Sixth Form College (CSFC). A high quality and environmentally sustainable residential development for 400 boarders is envisaged.
The college, which is part of Dukes Education Group, is currently progressing plans to provide a permanent new home for its teaching space and boarding accommodation across two sites in Cardiff Bay.
Approval has been secured for the teaching space and the latest application for the boarding building relates to a vacant undeveloped plot which fronts on to Pierhead Street and is used as a temporary car park. The land in question is bounded to the west by a Premier Inn hotel and to the north by a multi-storey car park.
Currently the school has three boarding houses split across two sites and the new accommodation will bring it under one roof.
A new building, which is in close proximity to rail and bus links to the city centre and beyond, has been designed jointly between Patel Taylor and Expedite Design Services with the application submitted by planning consultancy DWD.
The proposed building design is an L-shaped structure with two main buildings, each of them accommodating 200 student places and a variety of amenities.
A lower building would rise up to ten storeys with the second building climbing to 18 storeys.
The rooms within the accoomodation include 50 twin and 300 single rooms.
A spokesperson for the applicant said: “Following the successful application for the new CSFC academic hub at Bute Place we are pleased to be submitting the planning application for the boarding accommodation on Pierhead Street.
“This purpose built residential facility for GCSE and A-Level students will help provide vibrancy to the Cardiff Bay area whilst developing a plot of land that has remained empty for a number of years.
“Having worked with Cardiff City Council planning officers over the last 12 months we are hopeful they will be able to support the application and allow CSFC to press ahead with their relocation plans. The college is a fantastic asset for Cardiff and these two purpose built buildings will allow the college to further enhance its incredible education offering.”
