Riken Yamamoto Named 2024 Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate
Japanese architect Riken Yamamoto has been named as this year’s Pritzker Architecture Prize winner. The Japanese architect, who is now the 53rd Pritzker Architecture Prize laureate, was honored for his buildings that aim to foster community. “For me, to recognize space, is to recognize an entire community,” Yamamoto said. “The current architectural approach emphasizes privacy, negating the necessity of societal relationships. However, we can still honor the freedom of each individual while living together in architectural space as a republic, fostering harmony across cultures and phases of life.” Dezeen

A record number of home sales in New York City last quarter were made with all cash, as high mortgage rates continued to deter all but the wealthiest of buyers. Almost 70% of the properties sold in the city during the fourth quarter of 2023 were bought without a mortgage, up from 55% at the same time the year prior. “High mortgage rates are creating a real void for people who don’t have the strong finances that are required to buy in cash,” said Pamela Liebman, CEO of Corcoran. “It’s driving people who would be home buyers in New York into renting.” Financial Times

Compared to January, prices were up in seven district capitals, with Évora, the capital of Portugal’s south-central Alentejo region, leading the gains with prices up 2.3% monthly. Guarda (1.4%) and Coimbra (1.4%) rounded out the top three. The Portugal News
