New Home Sales in China Fall for 10th Straight Month
The slide continues in China’s real estate market as new home sales fell for the 10th straight month in March. In addition to the 10-month tumble, new-home transactions were down 46% to 358.3 billion yuan (US$49.6 billion) year over year. Industry insiders don’t see a quick turnaround, as the new-home market remains mired in weak demand, and would-be buyers have much greater room for price negotiation on previously owned properties. Australia’s Price Growth Streak Continues
Prices keep trending up Down Under. According to CoreLogic, home prices in Australia rose for the 14th straight month in March, with prices gaining in all of the nation’s capital cities, except for the Northern Territory’s Darwin. Nationally, prices were up 0.6% in March, matching February’s monthly gain of 0.6%. Perth led the way for growth among capital cities, with an increase of 1.9%, followed by Adelaide and Brisbane with gains of 1.4% and 1.1%, respectively. The Business Times
Half a Million Canadians Take Advantage of Program for First-Time Home Buyers
It’s been one year since the launch of Canada’s First-Home Savings Account (FHSA) program, and in that time more than 500,000 Canadians have signed up. The FHSA allows participants to save for a home by making annual contributions of C$8,000 (US$5,892), up to C$40,000. The contributions are tax deductible and interest accrued is tax-exempt. Only individuals who have not owned a home in the previous four calendar years are eligible to take advantage of the program. BNN Bloomberg
Brooklyn Nets’ Ben Simmons to Auction off His L.A. Mansion
Erstwhile NBA star Ben Simmons of the Brooklyn Nets will be listing his modern farmhouse in Los Angeles’s Hidden Hills neighborhood for auction after failing to find a buyer. The 12,000-square-foot home features 40-foot ceilings, a floating brass fireplace, Preciosa chandeliers, two kitchens, a home theater, a sizable gym, a 65-foot pool and a cabana with a game room. Simmons purchased the seven-bedroom, seven-and-a-half bathroom home for $17.5 million in 2021, before trying to sell it a year later for $22 million. The home is currently available for $17.495 million, but will head to a no-reserve auction on April 18, if it does not find a buyer. Realtor.com
