As Asian wonderland, Malaysia is a melting-pot of cultures offering travellers an experience of a lifetime. People visit the country to get an essence of true Asian culture. The Southeast Asian nation is dotted with some stunning architectural marvels (Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur are the tallest twin towers in the world), palaces, temples, islands, beaches, mountains and some spellbinding caves!
If this has you wooed, here’s our pick of top-rated attractions which makes Malaysia beautiful:
Orangutans are a threatened species now. The Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre for orangutans was started in 1964 to save these rescued animals from pet trade and illegal hunting. The rescued orangutans are eventually released into the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve.
For those who don’t know, Petronas are the tallest twin towers in the world, touching a height of 452 m! The top floors of the building literally are amid clouds. The towers have 88 floors and 76 elevators, and the two are inter-linked by a double skybridge on the 41st and 42nd floors. Most floors on the towers are rented by big international firms. Besides, there are over 300 stores, a beautiful art gallery, and entertainment centre.
This place is a heaven for scuba divers and water sports lovers in Malaysia. It’s basically a group of tiny islands and is part of a marine park. The place is a prime and premium tourist destination in northeastern Malaysia. People can reach most of the island by ferry or small boats. Adventure lovers can enjoy snorkelling, kayaking and scuba in the region.
Travellers must not miss visiting the gorgeous Penang Hill, which can be reached via train. There’s an air-conditioned funicular that takes people up at a height of 2007 m just in 10 minutes! And the journey is truly scenic. From the top of the hill, visitors can enjoy amazing views of the city.
An important place for adventure seekers, Mount Kinabalu in Malaysia is the country’s tallest mountain. The mountain is also home to one of the oldest parks in Malaysia, namely the Kinabalu Park, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The mountain is also a natural habitat for the threatened orangutans. However, there is a limitation on the numbers of climbers per day and permits are required beforehand.
Kek Lok Si Temple in George Town is the largest Buddhist temple located on a hill in Malaysia. This Asian architectural beauty is relatively new and features a seven-story pagoda. The prime feature of the temple are the 10000 Buddha statues surrounding the pagoda, which look absolutely incredible!
Another UNESCO World Heritage Site in Malaysia, Gunung Mulu National Park in Sarawak is noted for its caves. Most of the region is covered in rainforests, making it difficult to explore; in fact, most of the caves here were discovered in the 1970s. The Deer Cave here is quite beautiful and a must visit.
One of the prime cave attractions in the world, Batu Caves are an hour outside Kuala Lumpur in Selangor. The cave complex features three main caves and a series of smaller caves. All these have Buddha statues and centuries old shrines, dedicated to different Hindu gods. Cathedral Cave is the main cave here, which has a massive staircase (272 steps).
Surrounded by stunning mangroves and swamp forests, the park is around a 20-minute ride on a motorboat. Once you reach the shore, you can choose any of the 16 marked trails on the island that will help you navigate. The park is noted for its unique flora, which includes carnivorous plants and endangered proboscis monkeys and bearded pigs!
