Hot Dog Mogul Lists Oceanfront Florida Penthouse
Restaurateur Dick Portillo—founder of the Portillo’s restaurant chain known for its Chicago-style hot dogs—is selling his Naples, Florida, penthouse. Portillo has listed the oceanfront home for $33 million only about a year and a half after purchasing it for $11 million. The large markup is a result of an extensive remodel on the unit, which was built in 2002. Sitting on the 20th floor of a gated beachfront high-rise, the penthouse has five bedrooms and seven bathrooms across its almost 12,000 square feet. The home has floor-to-ceiling windows and more than 4,800 square feet of terraces, with views stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to the city of Naples. Robb Report
South Africa Hopes Stabler Politics and Economy Will Boost Home Sales
Following a disappointing year of residential property sales in South Africa last year—less than 40% of agents said they met their volume or value targets—many are optimistic about the year ahead. In a survey conducted by Lightstone, 73% of agents felt they would hit volume targets this year, while 72% feel they will hit value targets. While hurdles of economic and political uncertainty are still present, including the general election and a number of socioeconomic factors that affected sales last year, agents hope tensions in other parts of the world could benefit the South African market. A Sydney Home That’s a ’70s Time Capsule Heads to Auction
This home in Sydney has interiors so groovy, it’s like stepping back into the 1970s. This is the first time in nearly 50 years that the five-bedroom, three-bathroom home has been put on the market. The house, which will be auctioned March 2, has myriad colorful rooms. There’s a red kitchen with wood-paneled walls and matching red carpet and cabinetry; a yellow-themed bathroom with a yellow-brick bathtub; a cobalt blue bedroom and matching bathroom; and a living area with a green carpet and a mural of a mountainous landscape. Think Twice Before Buying a $1 Home
In January, there were 216 homes listed for $1 on Realtor.com. Additionally, there were another 333 listed for $5,000 or less. “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is,” says Realtor.com chief economist Danielle Hale. Many of these shockingly cheap homes are either typos, marketing ploys, scams, starting bid prices for actions, foreclosures or homes in need of tens of thousands of dollars in repairs. Extremely low prices like these often fail to attract buyers—last year, there were 23,000 properties listed on Auction.com with a starting bid of $1, and only 10% sold. Realtor.com
