With Venice currently receiving approximately 30 million tourists annually, the move is aimed at preserving the city and improving the quality of life for its residents, as repeatedly warned by UNESCO.
The plan, proposed by the Venetian consistory, will introduce an entry fee for tourists who visit the historic centre during the day without spending the night.
A trial period of 30 non-consecutive days over spring and summer weekends in 2024 is planned to assess the system’s effectiveness.
In the upcoming weeks, local authorities will finalise the project details.
The entry tickets will be available for purchase on a multilingual platform set to launch in the coming months.
Certain groups of day visitors will be exempt from the fee, including residents of the Venice municipality, individuals visiting for work or educational purposes, children under 14, those seeking medical treatment, participants in sporting events, and up to third-degree family members of residents.
The revenue generated from this initiative will not benefit the Consistory; rather, it will be used to cover the costs associated with the system.
The primary goal is to provide residents with an enhanced quality of life and improve the experience for tourists who choose to stay overnight in the city.

Both executives have chosen not to relocate their residences, opting instead to commute via private jets to Boeing’s headquarters.
David Calhoun assumed the role of Boeing’s CEO in January 2020, just before the onset of the pandemic.
During the pandemic, like many U.S. workers, he worked remotely from his two residences: a sprawling waterfront estate on New Hampshire’s Lake Sunapee and a home in a gated resort community in Buffalo, South Carolina.
Flight records reviewed by the Journal revealed that Calhoun has taken over 400 trips using Boeing’s fleet of private jets.
However, not all of these trips were to Boeing’s corporate headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, where the company relocated from Chicago in May of the previous year.
Records indicate that Calhoun utilised the company’s private planes for travel within the United States, including stops in California, Texas, and various locations along Florida’s coasts. Some flights were even headed internationally to destinations like Berlin, Dublin, and Turks and Caicos.
Boeing’s board mandates that Calhoun travels on Boeing-provided private jets for both business and personal reasons due to security concerns. Consequently, it is unclear how many of Calhoun’s numerous private flights were for official business purposes.

This move comes as both Pyongyang and Moscow officially confirmed a summit meeting between Kim and Russian President Vladimir Putin, amid Russia’s growing international isolation due to its involvement in the Ukraine conflict.
The Kremlin announced that Kim Jong Un would visit Russia in the coming days at the invitation of President Putin. Meanwhile, North Korea’s state news agency, KCNA, simply stated that the two leaders would “meet and have a talk,” offering no further details.
U.S. officials have indicated that the summit could include discussions about potential arms deals, which could support Russia’s ongoing war efforts in Ukraine and provide North Korea with a crucial economic and political lifeline.
Concerns have been raised by Washington and its allies regarding recent signs of increased military cooperation between Russia and North Korea. This meeting marks the second summit between Kim Jong Un and President Putin, with their first encounter taking place in 2019.
Despite official denials from both Pyongyang and Moscow, the United States claims that negotiations are actively progressing for North Korea to supply arms to Russia. This comes at a time when Russia has heavily depleted its arsenal in over 18 months of conflict in Ukraine.
The North Korean leader departed on his train late on Sunday, as revealed by a senior South Korean government official speaking to Reuters. The train is expected to take Kim to North Korea’s northeastern border with Russia, with the summit potentially occurring as early as Tuesday. However, the official cautioned that details are subject to change depending on the evolving situation in the region.
As of now, neither Moscow nor Pyongyang has confirmed an exact schedule for the summit.
