Firmwide growth and increased market demand fuels A&M’s Asia-Pacific investments and lines of service
KUALA LUMPUR, July 21, 2022–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Leading global professional services firm Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) today announced the opening of its new office in Malaysia, with the appointment of Corporate Performance Improvement (CPI) Managing Director, Tze Yann (Z) Tan as country leader. A&M’s Malaysia office extends the firm’s geographic footprint by leveraging its newly launched Southeast Asia and Australia (SEAA) business unit and fusing the firm’s strategic growth plans with its regional commitment.
In his new role, Mr. Tan will lead a team of about 20 A&M Malaysia professionals. He will work with Utsav Garg, a Managing Director and head of A&M’s SEAA business unit, to marshal the firm’s CPI, Private Equity Performance Improvement, and Restructuring & Turnaround lines of service, both focused on addressing market concerns and solving regional clients’ complex problems. Yoong Ming Chin, a Senior Director with Alvarez & Marsal’s Performance Improvement practice in Southeast Asia and Australia, will also join the Malaysia office.
Luis De Lucio, Managing Director and Head of Alvarez & Marsal’s Emerging Markets practice, said, "The Malaysia office opening represents the next phase of our Asia-Pacific (APAC) growth strategy. By aligning our operations in Singapore, Indonesia and Australia we are furthering our ability to maximize value and drive change for clients as we lay the groundwork for a future office in Vietnam. Tze’s and Yoong Ming’s in-depth market knowledge and experience enhances our global network of boots-on-the-ground experts."
Mr. Tan brings 20 years of experience in end-to-end operations performance improvement and supply chain management gained in both consulting and corporate roles. Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Tan spent 12 years with SC Johnson and Son in Shanghai and Kuala Lumpur, where he most recently served as Senior Director and Head of Supply Chain for Asia-Pacific. Before that, he served as SC Johnson and Son’s Director for Greater China Supply Chain and China Manufacturing Operations. He also spent eight years with McKinsey & Company.
Mr. Chin brings more than 13 years of strategy and operations consulting experience in the telecommunications, media and technology, financial services, payments, automotive, pharmaceutical, and retail industries across Southeast Asia. Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Chin served as Senior Managing Consultant with Mastercard Advisors, Asia Pacific, for three years. He also served as Senior Project Manager following eight years with Roland Berger SEA.
Mr. Garg noted that A&M’s value proposition of supporting corporate and PE clients with hands-on execution aimed at realizing tangible results was increasingly important given significant market disruption across Southeast Asia. "A number of our corporate and private equity clients are facing critical challenges with the perfect storm of a changing economic environment, tightening liquidity situation, supply chain disruptions, and volatility in commodity markets," he said. "Tze and Yoong Ming represent A&M’s muddy, boots-on-the-ground philosophy that enables us to address growing market demand in Malaysia and across SEAA."
Mr. Tan added, "Continuing uncertainty and economic volatility calls for A&M’s practical approach and results-driven mindset. The firm’s integrated structure will help clients across Malaysia and SEAA capitalize on opportunities and mitigate risks."
Mr. Tan earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in industrial and operations engineering from the University of Michigan and an executive MBA from Kellogg-HKUST School of Management. Mr. Chin earned a bachelor’s degree in mechatronics engineering from Monash University Malaysia.

Autos correspondent Pras Subramanian outlines how Tesla CEO Elon Musk's purchase of Twitter may affect the EV developer, in addition to looking at Ford's production output in the third quarter.
Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) shares have now plunged more than 20% in less than 20 days. There are several reasons for that, but a new catalyst now has the drop gaining momentum. Today's move lower was sparked by the news that Tesla CEO Elon Musk has reversed course and now intends to follow through with his bid to purchase Twitter for his original offer price of $54.20 per share.

DEEP DIVE When the stock market has jumped two days in a row, as it has now, it is easy to become complacent. But the Federal Reserve isn’t finished raising interest rates, and recession talk abounds.
The production cut move will likely push up already-high global energy prices and help oil-exporting Russia pay for its war in Ukraine.
The sticking point this time is what a prolonged recession will do to Roku's ad-supported business model. Despite what Roku's grim stock chart may show you, that scenario didn't play out either. The last 15 months have been bruising for Roku shareholders, but did the initial bearish thesis land its punch?
Warren Buffett has been buying shares of oil giant Occidental Petroleum (NYSE: OXY) hand over fist these days. Buffett took advantage of the recent slide in oil prices and Occidental Petroleum's stock to increase Berkshire's position in one of its top 10 holdings in late September. While oil is the primary focus of Buffett's bold bet on Occidental Petroleum, it's likely not the only thing he sees in the company.

With the market stumbling again over the last few weeks, shares of Enbridge (NYSE: ENB) have plunged 19% below their recent high. The sell-off has pushed the energy infrastructure giant's dividend yield up to 7%. Enbridge recently enhanced its ability to grow by making several value-enhancing moves.
Tilray and SNDL are both down by over 59%, and Aurora's shares are performing even worse, losing more than 77% of their value. Considering that the market-tracking SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust is only down by around 21.9%, it's no shock that shareholders are second-guessing their investments in these so-called growth stocks, nor is it surprising that potential buyers are hesitating to start new positions. In fact, with the exception of SNDL, their quarterly gross margins have actually gotten worse over the last three years.

You can hold on to Series I bonds for 30 years, but if you jumped in when the interest rate skyrocketed to 9.62%, you might be looking for an off-ramp well before then. The total return on I-bonds is made up of two parts — a fixed rate that’s set at the time of purchase and an inflation-adjusted rate that resets every six months, in November and May. The fixed rate has been 0% since May 2020. Looking at numbers already published, David Enna, founder of TipsWatch.com, a website that tracks inflation-protected securities, predicts the variable inflation-adjusted portion of the I-bonds formula will be around 6.3%, and likely fall to 3.5% eventually.

Many investors believe Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) is one of the best companies in the world, and I'm not here to argue against that proposition. While many stocks have seen their valuations come down, Apple's has stayed elevated. Additionally, economic headwinds are popping up that could spell disaster for Apple.
