The City of Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department is overjoyed to announce that free microchipping was an enormous success! During the month of June, the department microchipped1,517 Albuquerque pets for free. Microchips help lost pets get back to their owners and mitigate the number of lost pets who stay in our shelters.
“In 2021, 73 percent of dogs and cats arriving at our shelters were never reunited with their families mostly because they lacked proper identification, such as a microchip,” said Carolyn Ortega, Director of Animal Welfare Department. “The success of the campaign shows pet owners love their pets and want to ensure their safety and ability to be returned to them.”
Animal Welfare reminds residents of the importance of ensuring that the details linked to your pet’s microchip remain up-to-date so the pet can be successfully identified. Animal Welfare shelters provide a year-round free service to check on a pet’s microchip.
“Offering free microchipping is another step towards making Albuquerque an even more animal-friendly city,” Mayor Tim Keller said. “We’ve all seen the news that animal shelters across the state are full. As this service continues, getting rid of the cost barrier can make a huge difference in the number of lost pets who are reunited with their owners and relieve pressure on our animal shelters.”
We would like to express a special thank you to pet owners, media, and staff for their efforts to help keep pets safe in our community.
