His challenge was to eat a burger that enjoyed a ghost pepper puree. He ended up with severe abdominal & chest pain subsequent to violent retching and vomiting. And then there was his oesophagus. It had endured a tear measuring 2.5 cm (almost an inch).
The ghost pepper, also called as bhut jolokia, is an interspecific hybrid chilli pepper, which is cultivated in the Northeastern region of India. It is a hybrid of Capsicum Chinese and Capsicum frutescens.
The ghost pepper of bhut jolokia, is known by many different names in different provinces of India. The common names include Bih Jolokia, Raja Mircha, Raja Chilli, Nagahari or Borbih Jolokia. The ghost pepper is cultivated mainly in northeastern regions of India, including Nagaland and Assam and adjoining parts of neighbouring Bangladesh.
The word Bhut, was given from the Bhutias people, which means “ghost”, and was given the name as of the way the heat sneaking up on the one who eats it.
Back in the year 2007, Guinness World Records has certified that the ghost pepper was the world’s hottest chilli pepper, 170 times hotter than Tabasco sauce.
The ghost pepper has been around for several centuries, but was only introduced to the Western world in 2000.
Ripe peppers measures about 2.5-3.3 inches long with a red, yellow, orange, white, purple, or chocolate colour.
About the taste of ghost pepper of bhut jolokia-
At the very initial stage, one will notice the first flavour of an intense sweet chilli flavour, the heat does not kick in for the next 30-45 seconds. Once the heat kicks in, one can expect sweating, hiccups, watery eyes, and shortness of breath. The heat generally spikes over 10-15 minutes and lowers down after 30-40 minutes.
Why can’t one touch ghost pepper bare handed?
The ghost pepper consists of some oils and oils alone cause extreme chilli burns from one simple touch. It is so strong that being near them can cause eye irritation.
One thing to be taken into consideration while being around ghost pepper, don’t touch any of the super hots with uncovered hands. One must use latex or nitril gloves when handling hot peppers or seeds.
