Trump’s New York civil trial … Donald Trump this week complained of unfair treatment in defiant and rambling testimony on the witness stand at the civil fraud trial over his New York business … Justice Arthur Engoron, the judge overseeing the case, asked Trump’s lawyer Christopher Kise to control his client and added “this is not a political rally. This is a courtroom” … Trump also added that his company did not provide accurate estimates of the value of some of his trophy properties to banks … Ivanka Trump, the final witness called by New York state, sought to distance herself from the questionable valuation methods that have already been deemed fraudulent … On Thursday, Trump’s lawyers mounted a long-shot bid to toss the New York fraud lawsuit.
This week at the U.S. Supreme Court … The U.S. Supreme Court dealt a setback to oil and gas companies fighting a Louisiana parish’s $7 billion coastal erosion lawsuit by declining to postpone a trial in the case … In another case, the justices appeared inclined to uphold the legality of a federal law that makes it a crime for people under domestic violence restraining orders to have guns … The top court declined to take up an unsuccessful lawsuit filed by inventor David Howard seeking credit for a Hormel patent covering a method for pre-cooking sliced bacon … On Monday, the justices appeared divided over the Biden’s administration’s appeal of a lower court ruling that sovereign immunity does not shield the U.S. government from liability in lawsuits concerning credit reporting inaccuracies.
Union deals …
The SAG-AFTRA union ended the 118-day strike after reaching a tentative deal with Walt Disney, Netflix and other companies… The actors’ deal valued at $1 billion includes increases in minimum salaries, a new bonus paid by streaming services and protections against unauthorized use of AI-generated images … After United Auto Workers’ success with the Detroit Three automakers, president Shawn Fain said the union will “pull out all stops” in working to organize non-union U.S. auto plants … Workers at General Dynamics voted to ratify a new tentative agreement on Monday … On Wednesday, members of Ford’s Chicago assembly plant voted to ratify a proposed contract with the automaker … UAW members at General Motor’s Michigan plant have narrowly voted against a proposed contract with the U.S. automaker …The healthcare workers’ union voted to ratify a new contract with the hospital chain Kaiser Permanente, ending a months-long negotiation that resulted in the largest recorded strike in the U.S. medical sector … In Las Vegas, the Culinary Workers and Bartenders Unions reached a tentative labor deal with Wynn Resorts hours before a strike … A similar five-year contract deal was reached with MGM Resorts International on Thursday and with Caesars Entertainment on Wednesday.

Billionaire investor Ryan Cohen, dubbed the “meme king” for his ability to mobilize an army of retail investors during the pandemic-era meme stock craze, owned a big equity stake in home goods chain Bed Bath & Beyond for only a short stint in 2022. But litigation stemming from Cohen’s highly profitable sale of that stake is raising novel legal questions whose answers will outlive the peculiar moment in internet history when investors hung on Cohen’s every tweet.
