Despite the fact that India has been a significant market for BGMI or PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG), regulatory ambiguity appears to have been a problem for Krafton for a while now.
Towards the end of July 2022, Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) was removed from both the Google Play Store and the Apple Store in India. On July 28, the game was removed from the Apple Store and Google Play Store.
Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) was abruptly banned in India even after Krafton attempted to modify the game to suit the Indian audience and follow all Indian legal requirements.
Specific player IDs were not appearing in the in-game search results after the ban. The IDs were also being displayed in the ranking table when players search in-game with a migration message stating, “The player you are viewing has migrated to Battlegrounds Mobile India,”. The PUBG Mobile-BGMI data transfer also revealed a prompt notice of a similar nature.
The ban was brought in as it was alleged that the servers that BGMI was using were still sharing information with China.
To counteract this issue, according to reports, game developer Krafton in South Korea is moving the BGMI servers. Earlier, the issue arose because the software was in communication with servers that were either directly or indirectly based in China. Following several iterations of study of this by Indian agencies, the decision was made to remove the game from both app stores.
As the BGMI had a huge number of users in India, fans in the country were speculating about the return of BGMI in the country. However, amid speculations, the developer has not shared any confirmation or statement on the comeback of BGMI yet. The server of the battle royale title is shifting from India-Singapore to India-Malaysia.
